The Grounding Power of Nature

Life can be overwhelming. Between responsibilities, expectations, and the constant buzz of technology, it’s easy to feel disconnected—from ourselves, from others, and from the present moment. And that's before taking in anything in the media or the current political climate. But there is a simple, beautiful antidote waiting for us: nature. And what better time than today? The weather is getting warmer and everything is blooming! Trust me, my sinuses are fully aware!

However, for me, nature has always been a place of healing and grounding. Whether it’s the sound of leaves rustling in the wind, the warmth of the sun on my skin, or the rhythmic crash of ocean waves, nature reminds me to breathe, to be still, and to reconnect with what truly matters.

Here are some ways you can connect.

Ways to Find Grounding in Nature

Barefoot Walking – Walking barefoot on grass, sand, or soil—often called “earthing”—helps reconnect us to the energy of the earth. There’s something deeply calming about feeling the ground beneath you, steady and supportive.

Forest Bathing – The Japanese practice of Shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing, is about immersing yourself in the sights, sounds, and scents of the woods. Simply sitting or strolling in a forest can lower stress and boost overall well-being. Think about a hike or stroll down a trail at your local park.

Gardening – Whether you have a small potted plant or a full garden, tending to something living is a wonderful way to slow down and connect with nature. And we have so many options of both sustainable and beautiful plants to work with.

Listening to Natural Sounds – The sound of birds singing, a babbling brook, or wind rustling through trees has a way of quieting the mind and easing stress. For my birthday, a few weeks ago, I asked for a fountain. Now I can sit outside and listen to the water flowing through the fountain along with the birds chirping.

Watching the Sunrise or Sunset – Taking a few moments to watch the sky change colors is a powerful reminder of the beauty in slowing down and being present. I also love to watch the sky during a thunder storm.

Mindful Breathing Outdoors – Step outside, close your eyes, and take deep, intentional breaths. Feel the air fill your lungs and exhale any tension. FYI-this is a powerful exercise indoors as too.

Creative Expression in Nature – Whether it’s photography, painting, or journaling outdoors, using creativity to connect with nature brings a sense of peace and inspiration.

Nature is always there for us, offering a sanctuary of calm and a reminder of our place in the world. The more we make time for it, the more we can carry that sense of peace into our daily lives.

I encourage you to take a moment today to step outside—whether it’s a walk in the park, sitting on your porch with a cup of tea, or simply taking a deep breath of fresh air. Let nature ground you, recharge you, and remind you of the beauty that surrounds us every day.

What’s your favorite way to connect with nature? I’d love to hear how it helps you feel grounded.

Much love,

Ps. Here is an exercise that you can do to practice grounding right where you are. Feel free to sscreen shot it or message me and I'll send it to you in a PDF.
