What is self-care?

Self-care is a word or term that gets thrown around a lot. If we are to define it, Dictionary.com says:

self-care-the act of attending to one’s physical or mental health, generally without medical or other professional consultation

It’s been a rough week, so this weekend is all about self-care through exercise.

the products or practices used to comfort or soothe oneself

Seeing friends is my self-care.Taking a bath is a great self-care activity when you’re feeling stressed.

What self-care is not-anything that feels stressful, anxious, or beauty maintenance. You are all deserving of beauty maintenance and unless you find that practice relaxing and offers you a place to reset, it's not your self-care. True self-care will also feed your soul. If the thought of taking time just for yourself already causes anxiety-stop thinking about it and do it! As women we are the main caregivers for our family. We do a really good job of balancing work, parenting, household stuff, friendships, volunteer work, and I could go on. But where do you go to fill your cup? How are you feeding your soul so you have something of quality to give?

How can you incorporate self-care into your routine and practices? Start by doing things that bring your joy, like reading, walking, soaking in the tub, etc.

You deserve a self-care practice and the ones you love and care for, they deserve for you to have it too! :) It's the way you give your best.

Tip #1 - Designate time for you:

How can you designate a few minutes each day for yourself? This will vary for each woman based on her family, job, and personality. Maybe you wake up 15 minutes earlier and meditate or drink your coffee in silence. Maybe you designate someone else to clean up after dinner and go soak in the tub. You get to choose what you love and where it fits in. (YES, it does fit)

Tip #2 - Do what you love:

What do you love? I love nature and reading. I love to soak in the tub and practice meditation. What do you love that you don't make time for? How can you start adding in time to practice these things? Once you do, you will find added joy in your day and a peace and contentment that feeds your soul.

Tip #3 - Be creative:

Yes you are creative! Everyone is creative in their own way. Whether you paint, dance, cook, write, or garden...you are creative. Find the thing that brings you joy and start doing more of that!

Tip #4 - Disconnect:

I know this one can be challenging. Where can you be for 15 minutes alone? Don't laugh, I know some of you just said out loud the only place you can be alone is in the bathroom or kitchen pantry. I get it. I remember those days. Set a timer, give them an activity...then run-quickly.

Tip #5 - Sleep:

Lastly, I don't have to tell you how important it is to get good sleep. Not only enough sleep but good sleep. Let your bedroom be your oasis. A place that is calm and peaceful. Choose colors and fabrics that sooth you.

Start small-Be consistent-Be intentional-Reward yourself-and, guard your self talk.

If you still struggle with this practice, dig deep. Would it be helpful for you to have some accountability? Maybe start this practice with a friend. Remember, I am available too if you need additional resources. I wish you the best as you begin or reset your practices.

Much love,

Alice
